DEVIL IN THE DETAIL

One of the most exciting parts of photography, is the reveal at the end of a shoot. I am not by any means a technical photographer and rely more on luck than judgement when shooting with the iPhone or compact. Whilst in sunny Cyprus it was especially awkward to see the screen in bright locations, so sometimes I had to hope for the best. The camera does have the advantage of having a shaded viewfinder attachment on the rear, to make focussing easier, but even so it can be very easy to miss a shot while fumbling with the controls or chimping the previous shots.
So I always look forward to sitting down each evening with the iPad and curating the days take, to see what I have gathered. Nine times out of ten I end up with a lot of average shots, but occasionally, I get a few keepers. I aim for the vernacular style, to either capture a particular moment or vision, or to record the events of a day.
So besides tramping round dusty catacombs and shooting doors in back streets, I like to get a broad field of images, that I can look back on in the cold light of day and be transported back to the humid Mediterranean air.
This section represents a selection of my favourites, from various apps on the iPhone, a standard compact and a full spectrum conversion, with a variable bandwidth filter.

LONDON CALLING

Just before Xmas, I found myself back in London for a weekend, staying in Watford, in order to visit the Harry Potter Studios nearby. To make the most of the weekend, we did the usual tourist trip into the city, with a view to visiting some favourite locations and some new ones. As my grandchildren are  big fans of Paddington Bear, it made sense to see where he arrived in England and pick up some souvenirs. The hustle of the station on a wet Saturday evening, meant that camera photography was awkward, although I did see quite a number of expensive cameras in evidence over the weekend. Personally, I opted for my phone and the Fimo app again, with the X-Red film, that I really enjoy. The earlier Hipstamatic app with its hundreds of film/lens combinations came into play in Chinatown, one of the busiest parts of the city. MISSION IMPROBABLE

 My recent trip to Cyprus included an exploratory trip to Fabrika Hill, a 4th century cave system situated near the town of Paphos. A network of caves and man made spaces dot the landscape, with stairways cut from the living rock to connect them. Any buildings which may have sat on the land above, have now gone - apart from a small section of pebble mosaic, which may have decorated a large room. Next to Fabrika is a small shrine dedicated to a local saint and part of the shrine includes an underground spring.
